Hey Kids! (Lose Your Shirts On) Comics!

superpro_cgcCanada's Financial Post would have readers believe that the comic book market is still riding the high wave of the late 80s/early 90s with everything you touch shooting up in value. In fact, they all but state outright that it's safer than the stock market! The questions they ask are pretty loaded:

Asked what he would do with $50,000 to invest in comics, Mr. Boyd says "I would probably concentrate on early appearances of the superheroes that are still important pop cultural icons such as Superman, Batman and Spider Man. Those three characters, in particular, still have broad appeal and instant recognizability and as such there will always be demand for their early published appearances.

The rest of the article follows a similar methodology, with quotes that are either almost surely presented out of context or come from store owners obviously trying to pump their own sales. The lone sane viewpoint is buried, all the way at the end of the piece:

Herve St-Louis, publisher of Comicbookbin.com, a Calgarybased Web site dedicated to comic book fans and collectors, said those who want to invest in comics should abandon the idea and put their money into stocks or real estate.

"Forget the money aspect of comic books," he says. "Only buy what you like and pass it on to your kids."
