Mandatory Reading: Product Recall Websites

It seems that more than ever, there are recalls on baby and kid related items, and a lot of folks out there don’t seem to know where to turn to keep up with them all. When you do manage to keep up with what’s being recalled, you notice strange pattern emerging, like the fact that for a while there it appeared that Hannah Montana’s main goal in life was to poison young girls with lead.

Luckily, you can do a pretty good job of keeping track of stuff you need to get rid of by checking in on a mere two websites on a regular basis:

Parents.com
This is a fairly comprehensive site, especially if you can keep up with it. The Wife™ checks it on a weekly basis and has found a few things in our house that we’ve subsequently trashed. The interface is easy to read and pleasant to look at, which is a definite plus. Archives stretch back one year, which is probably good enough to check 95% of the things you buy or have given to you. Look in on it every week or two and you’ll be kept in the know regarding virtually all important kid related recall news, making you the king or queen of your parenting get-togethers.

U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission
While not nearly as nice to look at nor easy to use, the government database is far more comprehensive than Parent.com’s. It covers all US mandated recalls, not just on childrens items, so you can also check to see if your particular model of washing machine is going to explode with vengeful fury the next time you have to wash a load of dirty sheets. Even more impressive is the site’s database, which stretches back, literally, decades. So, the next time a friend gives you their kid’s outgrown Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles costume from 2002, you can go to CPSC.gov and find out if it’s going to cause your child to suddenly start speaking in tongues.

I had not, Chris. I looks pretty promising, but I kind of lean away from using or recommending paysites, even when they’re as cheap as this one. Still, it seems like it may be up other folks’ alley, so thanks for the suggestion.
