According to VGCharts, the new PS3 Slim appears to be a hit, having moved in the neighborhood of 600K units worldwide last week. Apparently there was a lot of pent up demand for the system, with a lot of people finding themselves in the same boat of simply not thinking that the machine was worth it at the previous price point. Maybe this'll act as a note that Sony can stick on their virtual refrigerator for the inevitable PS4 release - no matter how good the product may be, if the price is too high people will sit back and wait for it to hit the level they're willing to pay, even if it takes years.
And it's obviously not just the console that saw sales jump by a significant amount (somwhere in the neighborhood of 400%) - software sales were also up dramatically.
PS3 software also saw significant increases - many PS3 versions of multi-platform titles comfortably outselling their 360 counterparts this week. The big question will be how long can this bump be sustained for - we expect a fair dropoff next week but PS3 should remain ahead of 360 and Wii for most of September if not longer than that.
