In a rather neat little piece of cross-promotion, this week's episode of (the highly enjoyable) SUPERNATURAL will make the jump from promoting the spin-off comic from Wildstorm in random post-show bumpers to actually involving the comics in the episode's main plotline. It'll be interesting to see if this results in a sales bump for March, though I'd guess that the majority of any movement would be in BookScan's numbers, so we may never know if there's a discernible effect or not. Either way, I'd expect we'll see a similar stunt happen on some other TV show turned comic book at some point or another.
Here’s the official CW description: “Sam and Dean are shocked to discover a series of comic books titled “Supernatural” that accurately detail their lives as demon hunters. They track down the writer, Carver Edlund, who explains he has visions of the brothers that he then turns into comic books. Chuck reveals that Lilith is coming and she has a plan for Sam.”
If that last sentence is confusing, it could be because of a little minute change. Earlier reports listed the comic book artist’s name as Chuck Shurley, but perhaps at the last minute the show decided to make it even more meta by naming him after two of the show’s most popular writers.
Let’s go through the number of things that are awesome about that description.
-The comic book artist’s name is an obvious homage to Supernatural writers Jeremy Carver and Ben Edlund. So already, the meta episode is being ultra meta-y.
-The comic book nature in general allows the show to explore the entire history of the show, which should hopefully bring back reminders of some of fans favorite (and least favorite) episodes and storylines.
