WATCHMEN Spams Facebook...Hurm...

So, uh, remember that piece I posted yesterday, about the Watchmen world record thing, where I'd pieced together some disparate info into a hypothesis as to what world record the movie was set to break? (Oh hey, looky there! It's the post right below this one!)

Turns out, I was waaaaay off base with my theory.

watchmenspammdThe only world record that Warner Bros. was out to try to break was to see if they could turn off the largest amount of fans the fastest by spamming them with an ad for a 100% unrelated-to-Watchmen product.

Folks, like me, who had Become A Fan of Watchmen on Facebook were yesterday greeted by a commercial advertising the Guinness World Records game for the iPhone/iPod Touch. What this has to do with Watchmen, the movie or graphic novel, is nada, zip, zilch, nothing.

I was slightly annoyed by the spam, but others...didn't take it so well. Here's a small sampling of their responses...

So, the lesson in all of this...is likely lost on WB. Odds are they were successful with this venture, as I'm sure enough people were interested enough in the game to buy it right there, on the spot. (In all fairness, if it weren't a $5 game, I'd consider it as it does look like a potentially decent time waster.) The rest of us, well we were momentarily inconvenienced, but enough so that I'm sure a small percentage of these folks will never Become A Fan of any WB movies or shows again. Keep it up, soulless marketing folks, and eventually you'll get yours!
